This article was an eye opener for me. Probably half of these tools were new to me. I can say that 25% of them I was very familiar with or I am currently using. One of the things that surprise me the most was that 10 of the top 100 tools of 2013 were brand new tools! This was very shocking to me because it make me realize how fast technology is advancing every year. On the other side, (thanks to this class) during a period of 2 or 3 weeks I have already learned over ten great technological tools that can be very handy for my coaching career.
Many of these tools on the list are great technological resources. All of them are well designed and can enhance your experience dealing with common issues or areas where you need to improve. Personally I like the most "Netvibe, dashboard for everything". This program allows you to have "Everything that matters to you, all in one dashboard". You can manage all your internet accounts from this page. example: you can manage twitter, pictures and apps. The reason I like this idea is because it has the RSS reader on the page and it is pretty simple to use. Sometimes managing different email accounts, instagram, facebook, youtube, etc can be too much. With Netvibe you can have everything in your dashboard...impressive!!
After reading these articles I had mixed feelings. I believe completing my masters degree on line was a perfect fit for me and my schedule. The educational system is going that direction. In the article created by www.onlineeducation.net mentioned that "by 2019, it is estimated that 50% of all classes taught will be delivered online". I am also very enthusiastic about the idea that higher education is not only for the people who can afford it, thanks to the internet people would be able to educate themselves (www.onlineeducation.net). In addition to this I am happy with the fact that this class is helping me catch up with the online technology. The down side of reading these articles is that now, I have realized what I do not know. Larry Ferlazzo's description of these websites was short and to the point, but he mentioned 27 different website. I do not doubt of the value of these websites, but I feel that I do not have the time to learn all if them. Once I heard someone saying "It is not how much you know, if not how to find what you need to know" (Anonymous). In the future, I hope we can keep the access to our classes so that when we need one of these tools we can go back and access to it or learn it.
Many of the tools learned during these couple weeks on KIN710 are very useful. Personally I like the idea of having my own website because this helps me to see myself more professional. Anyone who is going to trust you to coach their kids will want to know who you are. They will ask other people about you, look up your name online, and they will do their research on you! I don't think that your personal Facebook page is enough. Having your professional Website is a step above the average. It gives people the opportunity to visit your website and they can share your experiences as coach with others. I am really excited about having this professional image and continue learning other tools that will help me get caught up with the new technology.
Podcasting have became very popular in the education system and has not reached its potential. In my opinion, I prefer the personal interaction of meeting your teacher and asking questions when needed rather than emailing them. Although I like the personal touch I think that podcasting is a great innovative way to improve the educational process. Before starting this online master degree I thought this was very innovative (100% online Masters), but during this class I have been learning new technological tools that enhance the learning process. I also like the idea that our teacher is one of the pioneers who started using similar tools during the early stages in the university system here in California (Fresno Bee article).
Giving students the opportunity to have the tool where they can have this flexibility for their learning process is great, You can view a podcast any time. You can stop to take notes, you can rewind if you did not understand something or even mix the most important part of the lectures to study. On the personal level as ESL (English as Second Language) student, I would have love to have this tool when I started college. I know many times I got lost in some classes because I could not understand something. I guess if you have tools to make things easier why make harder on ourself?
I like the idea of social networking in relation to education in general not just undergraduate. I am not very familiar with this type of format Facebook program. In my opinion, this can be little distractive, especially for the younger generations. I agree that this "Digital Natives" perceive the way of connection and communication little different than people of my age or even older. Sometimes I feel I am behind and constantly trying to catch up with social networking. I think this class has a similar format to the one from facebook or black board. And the reason I am doing this Master is because of the many benefits of this format. I really enjoy reading other students materials and work on this class. I believe this is a valuable network of students/educators with a common goal: Positive impact education of the next generation. I also believe that if we have an available resource to better improve this process we should use it. (students and teachers)
I really enjoy interacting with other students in this program because I can relate to their situation and I look forward to learn from their experiences.
This was a great article to read. Before reading this I would agree that this young generation was affected in a negative way by technology. It is true that the lack of human interaction among teens becomes even a funny situation. It is very common to see two or three teenagers together on the phone at the same time and not even talking to each others for several minutes. I don't know if they are "multitasking" on their phone but definitely they don't look connected at their personal level. On the flip side we cant denied that they are more sociable!! Many of them socialize with over 30 or 40 friends in the daily bases.
On the educational level I believe that "connectivity" is giving students from the whole world many more resources and opportunities which 15 or 20 years ago were unthinkable. One example is our Master degree that can be completed 100% online. This format gives opportunity to those who can assist to regular classes to learn and receive an education thanks to the advance of internet and other technologies. For me there is not doubt that people are getting educate because of the amount of available information, the question is if this is the good kind of information ? (because of the noise). Only time will tells us!
