Gaston Cignetti - Coaching Philosophy
The main reason I decided to coach is because I would
like to impact our youth in our community. I have learned so much from this
sport, not only has it been one of my greatest passions in life, but it has
helped build and developed me to the man I am today. I would love to give
back what I have learned and hope I can impact someone’s life as soccer did in
mine.
I was born in Argentina and soccer is practically like a religion. The first
sport you learn how to play is soccer, now you may not have learned it with the
usual ball, maybe a rock, rolled up tape or whatever we found that resembled a
round object. But being born in a country with such a strong passion for a sport
makes it that much more interesting and exciting to play. I played
soccer at a young age for Talleres de Cordoba, a semi
professional team from my city, and after discovering that I would not be
resigned another year I was devastated and decided to explore a
different option. I was always intrigued with studding abroad and thought
maybe I could get a soccer scholarship in a different country. In 2001 I
got a full ride scholarship to play for Fresno Pacific University and I was able
to play all four years and receive a Bachelor’s degree in International
Business. Not only did soccer give me the opportunity to travel, live in a
different country, learn a different culture and language. It also
gave me an education which is something no one can ever take away from me.
I believe playing soccer as a child, not only builds character and confidence
but it also gave me a sense of accomplishment. So this is what after so many
years of playing motivated me to become a coach. I would like to use soccer as a
tool to educate and prepare children for life, helping them to work as team
players and not as an individual, help them bring them out of their shell or shyness, create a completive spirit, teach them technical skills,
stay in shape and healthy, create a positive learning environment, and all while
having fun. My goal is to mold a group of individuals to play as a team, learn
how to communicate, to be responsible and hold each other accountable. But most
importantly nurture their dreams and help them develop the best soccer player
that they can be. I would like to teach children to strive to win but to
understand that this will not always happen. It’s more than wins or losses; it’s
about learning and improving on our skills in every day practice. This will help
them to transfer those new skills constantly to the game.
I am a strong believer in that we can overcome major
obstacles, including bouncing back from mistakes in games, as long as we persist
and believe in ourselves, because almost anything can be accomplished with hard
work and effort. All in all at the end of the day if you truly give your
very best effort and you still didn’t accomplish your goal you will have no
regrets.
In summary I would like to transfer all my passion for soccer to my players
so that they can work hard to leave everything on the field by giving their very
best effort regardless of the result. I don’t think that I would be able
to give back to other as much as I have received from this beautiful sport in my
life. But I definitely believe that coaching is a great way to start.
